Carol's Music Ministry
Mountain View, Arkansas
Finally.....Carol gets to meet one of her favorite singers and email buddy, Maxine Cummins!
Finally.....Carol gets to meet one of her favorite singers and email buddy, Maxine Cummins!
What a FANTASTIC weekend! My husband, Tommy, and I visited Mountain View, Arkansas for the annual Merle Travis Thumb Pickin' Contest! We also celebrated our 18th Wedding Anniversary on the 18th!!! (And "they" said it would NEVER last!!! ha)

This is my fatherinlaw (Bud How)'s 15th year to attend. It was GREAT fun!

All of these greatly talented men compete for the title and just bless the hearts AND EARS of everyone who is within earshot!

Along with the contest, a highlight event is the appearance and performance of Merle Travis' son, Thom Bresh!

Through my fatherinlaw, I had become a big fan of singer Maxine Cummins. After being at one of the contests, Dad had brought her music back for me to listen to. Maxine sings a lot of the big band era songs and has such a sweet "bluesy" tone to her voice! WELL, I FINALLY GOT TO MEET HER, in 2001!!!! She and I had become email buddies, but to see her and hear her in person was just a blessing!

In the evening, everyone goes into the "town square" and plays/jams with whoever......every street corner and every front porch has a group of musicians pickin' and singin'.....the odd part is that none of the music interfers with any one else's music!!! We just carried our instruments (I carried my voice) around from group to group and joined in on the fun! If I were retirement age, Mountain View would be my first choice!!!

I was blessed with the opportunity to meet such great talents and left Mountain View with a renewed spirit in people and new friends! CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK NEXT YEAR!!!!!

THANK YOU TO MOUNTAIN VIEW AND MOON MULLINS (dear friend of the How Family) FOR MAKING THIS ALL POSSIBLE FOR THE PUBLIC!!!!
The following pictures are from the May 17-18, 2002 Merle Travis Thumb-Pickin' Contest!

And perform he did!!! He was WIRED and so were we! Great job, Thom!
Carol Sanguinette-How with Ben Hall!
What a treat to see/hear this young man (12 years old)! Ben is from Mississippi and won second place in the Travis Thumb-Pickin' Contest! Everyone loved him!
Eddie & Martha Adcock perform at the Saturday evening program.
Always a blessing! These two have stolen hearts all over the place!

Love that low, sultry voice!!! Love that sweet lovely spirit!!
WHAT A CREW!!!
L-R: "Silly" Eddie Adcock, "Smilin'" Thom Bresh, "Silvery" Tommy Flint, "Sensible" Moon Mullins and "Slow-Talkin'" Steve Rector! Now this is a group of talents and wonderful pickers!!!! What a treat to sit in the presence of these fellows, listening to their stories about Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and others who have been so essential in the legacy of Thumb-Pickin'! Thank you, fellows, for all the wonderful trivia and music!!!!
Lou works VERY hard to keep things goin' at the Workshops and Theater programs!
So does sound man, Dan, but we didn't get a picture of him! Thanks, fella's, for your hard work!
Moon Mullins with Bud & Bette How.
Long-time friends! This is Bud How's 15th trip to Mountain View for the Thumb-Pickin' Contest! Bud & Bette go further back then that, though, with their friendship with Moon.
Moon Mullins with Tommy & Carol......
We just love this guy! What a sweetheart and what a talent! Thank you, Moon, for all you do to keep the sound alive!!!
The following pictures are from the 2001 Merle Travis Thumb Pickin' Contest!

The How Family with Moon Mullins
Bud and Bette How (Carol's mother & fatherinlaw) and Liz How Duggan (Carol's sisterinlaw) have been friends with Moon Mullins for many many years (way back to Silver Dollar City Days...right Moon?)....Anyway, Carol and her husband Tom join the group for this "old friends" picture! Thank you, Moon, for your friendship!
Thom Bresh & Buster B. Jones
Thom, right, is the son of legendary Hall of Fame guitar great "Merle Travis", and can recreate that famous "Travis style". Each year, Thom makes a visit to Mountain View to perform at the program. Buster B. Jones, long time friend to Thom, shows off his "fast fingers" in this number! What a talent both these men are! Thom & Buster are completing a new duet recording project entitled "Guts & Steel" which will be released in September 2001.
Thom Bresh joins us at the 'Town Square'
Everyone enjoyed listening to Thom sing and pick at the Town Square.....here he is playing Bud How's Taylor guitar! Check out Thom's website at http://www.bresh.com

Maxine and her husband, Ed, have the Georgia Fingerstyle Guitar Association website. Check it out at http://www.gfga.org This site will fill you in on many great guitarists and their schedules.
Carol made a new friend, Margie.....also a cancer survivor....who puts a nice tone to the guitar and has a wonderful singing voice!
This lady had a bout with throat cancer....God healed and has allowed Margie to continue to pick and sing (and grin!!) Love you, Margie....thank you for your new friendship!
Carol with Eddie & Martha Adcock
More fantastic talent! Eddie & Martha are great talents and great people! What a pleasure to meet them and see them perform! Check out their website at http://www.eddieandmarthaadcock.com/
Three great guitarists and ONE CLOWN!
Dave Staples, the clownman Eddie Adcock and Moon Mullins bless the audience with their talents and humor!
Didn't get this fella's name, but he plays a mean saw and great upright bass guitar!
Another great picker, Steve Rector, (first runner-up in the contest) and his sweet wife!
Tom How and his Aunt Tina Davis join in the fun!
After an invitation to join the other "jiggers" on stage, Tom and Aunt Tina take up the offer!
Part of the family who ventured to Mountain View
There were nine of us who made this trip and loved every moment of it.....except the moments when cousins Fred and Carrie May had a flat on their trailer...that was not fun!
Tina and Chuck Davis
This is Tom How's aunt and uncle! Aunt Tina is very active in cancer awareness (as is Carol)....Tina is a survivor, too!
